Jean-Dominique Burton was born on 13 October 1952 in Huy, Belgium. After studying typography, printing and drawing, it was to photography and cinema that he naturally turned, fascinated by human beings and the traces they leave behind.

As a humanist with an insatiable curiosity and a keen eye, his many journeys from the Atlas Mountains to the Himalayas have given him the inspiration for his portraits of cities and their inhabitants. Like an archaeologist or an ethnologist, he studies traces, scars, masks, human faces and trees, from which he draws his uniquely enigmatic portraits.
